Great item, great price, no problems whatsoever...
By W. Lindsey
This Thule hitch-mount "hard-shell" cargo carrier I envisioned as just what was needed to double the effective size of my 2007 Toyota Corolla's trunk. It has worked out exactly as expected. It's 13 cu. ft. of space doubles the a little more than 13 cu. ft. space of the trunk.

Everything was in the box (for both 1 1/4" and 2" hitch receivers), shipping was free (and pretty quick) in addition to $40 or so off the list price by buying from Amazon, assembly and installation was a snap (I already had a 1 1/4" receiver mounted on my Corolla along with the flat plug type wiring necessary for the included lights), and it has done just what I needed on a 3000 mile trip in the West in May - haul my camping equipment while still having the car trunk available for everything else I needed.

Only "issue" is just what I expected from putting such a contrapation on the back of my relatively low slung Corolla, i.e., it will occasionally drag when going up or down a sharp incline. However, this is usually quite avoidable by paying attention by going slowly up and down such inclines (like pulling into or out of a gas station or convenience store) and taking such inclines at an angle (i.e., not perpendicular to the street).

A major upside of these type carriers is that one gets less wind drag and better mileage from such this configuration versus the high wind drag of roof mounted carriers. Evidence? I got over 41 mpg on my noted 3000 mile trip! I also does not obstruct the view out the back window at all essentially.

Easy setup and exactly as described

I was a little reluctant to buy this based on a previous review that incorrectly stated that it would only work on a 1 1/4 hitch. I just installed it on a 2" and everything works great.

Just as advertised

The price was right and like other reviewers wish Thule could have included some sort of locking feature to lock it to my hitch. I was also not satisfied with the length of bolt provided (might be OK without the 2" adapter - which came pre-installed which tells me most people must use this box with a 2" receiver) to attach it to my hitch so went to my local Home Depot and bought the longest one they had that would fit, along with another flat washer, locking washer, and a nut. Used a box wrench to tighten everything down. I just took it on an 1800 mile trip and it was as solid at the end as it was in the beginning (and that includes bottoming it out on a couple of driveways).

As to the box itself, I could not tell from the Amazon description whether it came with the lighted license plate holder or not. It did. Assembly was pretty straight forward, although I admit there were a couple of times I wished for Ikea type simplified instruction.

I never did use the feature that tilts it as I had enough room to open the tailgate (2011 Outback) without using it. Instructions say to unload the box before using this feature - which would have been a royal pain - so I was glad it was not needed.

There is also the issue of not being able to remove the key unless the box is closed and locked. A pain in the beginning, but after shutting the lid, thinking it was closed and not being able to lock it because it was not as shut as I though made me decide this feature was OK after all.

One final note. Because this was a large item, I had to pay extra for shipping ($50 + tax) but that was pretty reasonable compared to some sellers. Because I had to pay for shipping, I was given a guaranteed delivery date. It was late. Called customer service and they immediately, without hesitation, refunded the shipping and tax to my credit card.

All around, a good experience with the product (Thule 635C Transporter) and with Amazon.
